Communications and PR Consultant Manager

Contract Length: One-year fixed- term (contract extension based on performance)  

Location:  Lagos 

Salary:  N90,000-N120,000 

Report to: Executive Director

The Bisi Alimi foundation is looking a talented and passionate candidate to head its new communications department. The Communications and PR Manager will lead on the newly developed communication strategy of the foundation. The post holder will report directly to the Executive Director whilst working in close collaboration with all other areas of the organisation.

The successful candidate must have a good understanding of media landscape in Nigeria with eye for connections and opportunities. The person must have between 2-5 years of experience in the field. The successful candidate will create and maintain a favorable public image for the foundation by communicating programs, accomplishments and/or points of view.

This role will not be limited to media coverage, but it will also include speaking opportunities, drafting engaging newsletters. The successful candidate will be a key point of contact for all press enquiries and will therefore be required to have an in-depth understanding of the foundation’s values, mission and have the ability to deal with journalists at all levels.

The role will also assist in writing, managing and streamlining the foundation’s communications, ensuring that any enquiries are dealt with efficiently and in a professional manner. Therefore, outstanding writing skills and experience of conveying complex subject matters in an engaging and easy to understand way are a must have.

The successful candidate will oversee managing the foundation social media, branding and outward communication and public relations image, identifying possible partnerships.

The Bisi Alimi Foundation is an organisation working to accelerate social acceptance of LGBT people in Nigeria, therefore, the successful candidate must be either an LGBT person or someone who has a deep understanding of LGBT issues in Nigeria. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the marketing and public relations staff.
  • Create informative and interesting press releases, press kits, and related communication materials.
  • Identify and build a database of celebrities and social media influencers that we can work with in Nigeria.
  • Lead on the foundation’s monthly newsletters,
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies that fits into the foundation’s aim of accelerating social acceptance of LGBT people in Nigeria.
  • Manages the foundation’s social media pages
  • Prepare detailed media activity reports.
  • Plan and manage the design, content, and production of all communication materials.
  • Work with other departments in the foundation to generate new ideas and strategies.
  • Supervise projects to guarantee all content is publication-ready.
  • Create communication and promotional strategies for new programms launches and events.
  • Work on the yearly campaign plans and strategies of the foundation.
  • Respond to communication-related issues in a timely manner.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or relevant field.
  • A minimum of 2-5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Proven experience creating targeted content is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to multitask and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities.
  • Understanding of LGBT issues in Nigeria
  • While we are open to considering non-LGBT people for this role, we are will only consider applicants that have compassionate understanding of LGBT issues in Nigeria .

About you: 

  • You will have a confident and enthusiastic nature and have the ability to communicate effectively, externally as well as internally, with stakeholders across the business.
  • Possess strong analytical skills and be extremely organised to ensure the maintenance of accurate internal filing systems which will assist you in writing and sharing PR updates and reports.
  • You will be responsible for planning, implementing and measuring external communications and PR activities
  • Be able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously ensuring deadlines are met
  • Have solid corporate PR experience

  • Must be a confident communicator and presenter

  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Have a full understanding of media needs and media relationships

  • Possess the ability to keep information confidential
  • Tactical understanding of all primary social media platforms
  • Ability to work in high-stress environments, often for long hours
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude
  • Self motivated with a positive and professional approach to management

Education/degrees for a Public Relations Manager

Most have a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, English, Communications or Marketing.

Policy Advocacy Officer

Salary:  N80,000-N100,000  

Report to:  Research & Policy Manager

The Bisi Alimi Foundation is looking for a Policy Advocacy Officer who is passionate about policy advocacy and is willing to advocate on sexual orientation and gender identity rights in Nigeria.

The Bisi Alimi Foundation has a core strategic plan to carry out legislative engagement and policy advocacy with Nigerian law makers and policy drivers in order to effect change and better protection for LGBT people in Nigeria.

The candidate for this role must be purpose driven, passionate about LGBT rights and have a good understanding of the inner workings of the political and legislative scene in Nigeria. Focus will be on the National Assembly and heads of MDAs in Nigeria.

The Candidate should also have at least 2-5 years of experience carrying out advocacy work with law makers or policy makers and in producing policy documents for advocacy. Having well demonstrated lobbying skills will be an advantage.


Key Responsibilities 
  • Work with the Research and Policy Manager to carry out policy advocacy and legislative engagement in Nigeria
  • Build and manage partnerships and alliances with law makers and policy makers in Nigeria.
  • Manage high-profile engagements with law makers and Policy makers, including influencing agendas to raise awareness about sexual orientation and gender identity rights in Nigeria.
  • Produce and publish quality policy documents.
  • Share and leverage evidence, engage directly with law makers and policy drivers, cultivate and leverage on relationships, deploy strategic communications through policy statements, speak and publish across influential platforms.
  • Represent the Bisi Alimi Foundation at legislative plenary sessions or relevant national conferences that are relevant to the objectives of the Bisi Alimi Foundation. This includes both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches and attending sessions and other meetings as necessary.
  • Identify, track and analyse key national and global policy developments and trends relevant to sexual orientation, gender identity and expressions.
  • Collaborate with the Research and Policy Manager to ensure strategic alignment and identify cross-cutting initiatives and opportunities. Manage all aspects of a range of activities related to legislative engagement and policy engagements and events.

Essential Qualifications, Experience & Attributes 
  • Bachelor degree in law, international relations, diplomacy, public administration or any relevant field.
  • At least 2-5 years of experience working in a legislative house or the National Assembly, or in policy advocacy, or in public affairs aimed at influencing policy change.
  • Knowledge of international law, legislative procedures in Nigeria and public administration.
  • Ability to work autonomously combined with experience working remotely and in support of programs.
  • Experience developing and managing efforts to influence law makers, policymakers, NGOs, and other external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, writing, editing and verbal skills for communicating with broad and diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop strong policy documents.
  • Creative, energetic and innovative approach to identifying solutions.
  • Effective as a collaborator in complex internal and external organizations.
  • Ability to work with efficiency and diplomacy.
  • Proven ability to build and cultivate strong relationships.
  • Balance competing priorities and identify when to escalate an issue or call out a risk.
