Job Application- Research Officer

Job Title- Research Officer

Reporting to- Country Director and Operations Manager

Location- Lagos/Abuja

Contract time- One-year contract with possibility of extension

Salary- N120-N150k

Job Purpose

Research is a core part of the work we do at the Bisi Alimi Foundation, it informs all we do, including our training and advocacy work.

As an organisation that believes in the power of data, we are equally excited about the possibility of turning data to story.

It is for this reason we are looking for someone with drive for research and passion for storytelling.

Our research and knowledge officer will overlook our research portfolio and look for even more impactful opportunities we can use data to drive social acceptance of LGBTQI people in Nigeria as well as tell stories that will change hearts and minds.

Objectives

  • To generate research-based data and evidence to inform the Bisi Alimi Foundation’s programming
  • Build a knowledge repository on LGBT and Diversity and Inclusion issues in Nigeria using research
  • Develop informative dataset to accelerate social acceptance of LGBT persons in Nigeria.

Role expectation

  • Build a 3-year research plan spanning 2022-2025
    • Including a quarterly fact sheets on issues affecting LGBTQI people in Nigeria
    • 3 thematic research studies
      • Workplace Index
      • HIV discrimination in the workplace
      • Impact of Homophobia study.
    • Work with the Policy and Advocacy office to develop easy to understand data driven policy papers for lawmaker, diplomatic community and policy makers
    • Establish and operationalize a repository of LGBTQI+ data/information
  • Build connections and relationships with donors
    • Identify funding opportunities for impactful research in Nigeria
    • Work with ED and CD to build relationship with the donor community within and outside Nigeria
    • Work with the ED, CD and OM to develop a robust fundraising database
  • Develop easy to understand factsheets on thematic intersectional issues affecting LGBTQI persons in Nigeria
  • Support the LDO to update all the training materials we use in conducting our training activities.

Core Skills

  • Understanding of LGBTQI issues in Nigeria
  • Knowledge of research and evaluation methodologies.
  • Evidence of good analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex ideas.
  • Proficiency in written work, including report writing.
  • Ability to exercise own initiative, prioritize and manage own workload, and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to tell stories using data
  • Ability to analyze and resolve research issues in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Excellent in developing research work plans according to project needs.
  • Identify potential donors and build strong relationships with them.
  • Ability to develop grant proposals and assist in grant completion and submission processes to their field.
  • Being member of the LGBTQI community.

Qualification

  • A post graduate degree in Sociology, Statistic, Research, Law, Political Science or any related field
  • Over 3 years working with a not for profit in the same field
  • Understanding of LGBTQI landscape in Nigeria.

Job Purpose

As an organisation, we realised that if we are to make change happens, we will need to develop impactful policy and advocacy tools that can provide information and knowledge on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Self Expression to lawmakers, policymakers and diplomatic community.

It is for the reason we are looking for someone with well vast knowledge in policy development, interpretation, lobbying and advocacy. We are also looking for someone with passion for networking and building relationship.

Objectives

  • Using well thought through and simplified policy to Improve the understanding on LGBTQI+ issues in Nigeria
  • Develop a measurable and robust policy strategy to accelerate social acceptance of LGBTQI persons in Nigeria
  • Build a strong cohort of allies and supporters for LGBTQI+ people in Nigeria
  • Increase the support of LGBTQI+ people and issues in Nigeria

Key Tasks

  • Produce monthly policy papers to be shared with key policy gatekeepers in Nigeria
  • Must have connection within the political system in Nigeria
  • Develop strategic relationship with
    • National Association of Nigerian Students,
    • the National Assembly,
    • Political Parties,
    • Traditional community
    • Business community
    • Healthcare institutions
    • Political elites,
    • Civil societies,
    • The Nigerian Police
    • Religious and Diplomatic community.
  • Develop a strategy of quarterly engagement between professional, public and civil society organizations in the field of human rights of the LGBTQI+ community.
  • Build one-to-one engagement with policy makers.
  • Organize educational talks on LGBTQI+ issues and with other intersections in Nigeria
  • Develop policy paper on intersectionality (LGBTQI+ issues + other issues like Politics, women’s right Police brutality).
  • One on one engagement with legal chambers, police and judiciary and organize round table discussion.
  • Publish context specific briefing papers/reports on LGBTQI+ Diversity and Inclusion issues in Nigeria.

Core Skills

  • Experience in policy, advocacy, high level policy engagements.
  • Understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and its importance on LGBTQI policy and advocacy.
  • Inspirational public speaker
  • Great communicator and networker
  • Advanced and persuasive written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully coordinate, advocate and negotiate.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and broad stakeholder relationships.
  • Deep understanding of, and ability to apply environmental context, data, and legislation.
  • Evidence of working with policy makers, involvement in policy development and understanding of policy making structures and processes in Nigeria.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in delivering presentations.
  • Preferably and LGBTQI person

 

Qualification

  • Masters or higher degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, International Law and Diplomacy or related field
  • Experience in working with political institutions, civil societies and other related institutions
  • Over 3 years’ work experience in Policy and Advocacy in related field
  • Understanding of LGBTQI landscape in Nigeria.

Media Justice Fellowship Application 2022

The Bisi Alimi Foundation Media Justice Fellowship provides support to journalists and lawyers in Nigeria to strengthen their knowledge on LGBTI subjects and issues in relations to the media storytelling and legal representation, and support.

The fellowship is designed to challenge and change the narratives about LGBTQI+ people are being reported in the media and legal systems in Nigeria.

We are not only creating alternative narratives but supporting our fellows to tell human stories when it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Since 2017, we have trained over 50 lawyers and journalists.
